On Thursday, July 31, 2025, delegates from the Association of Facilities Management Practitioners, Nigeria (AFMPN) paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) at its Ikeja headquarters.
Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) was carved out of the erstwhile Sewage department of the Office of Drainage Services in the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources to oversee and coordinate the implementation of policies, programmes, and projects relating to sewage and faecal sludge management in Lagos State in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law (EMPL), 2017.
In attendance were:
- Adefemi Afolabi – General Manager, LSWMO
- Olumide Aina – President, AFMPN
- Sulaiman Ijaoba – Vice President/Chairman, Western Region, AFMPN
- Managing Director, Libra FM
- Adefemi Afolabi – General Manager, LSWMO
The AFMPN team was warmly received by Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, who led the agency’s delegation and conveyed greetings from the Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab.
During the meeting, the LSWMO team shared their objectives and strategic plans for improving wastewater management in Lagos, highlighting key challenges such as poor disposal practices, low compliance among facility operators, and limited public awareness.
AFMPN proposed strategic collaboration in areas including awareness campaigns for facility owners/managers; and advocacy for regulatory compliance and best practices.
The LSWMO welcomed the initiative, recognizing AFMPN’s potential as a bridge to engage the private sector. Both parties agreed to organize a joint workshop/seminar, and draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to define partnership roles.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with a shared commitment to environmental sustainability, regulatory compliance, and capacity building in Nigeria’s built environment.
